About Us SPIN

SPIN was formed in September 2011, following the Government’s cuts to the School Sport Partnerships which had existed for 11 years.  The cuts were devastating, but because our partnership had been so successful, actively involving 47 local schools and 10,000 children, we were determined to keep it.  SPIN staff work hard to ensure that schools are provided with a high quality service to support the development of PE and sport.  Now, 2½ years on, SPIN is one of the biggest and most active sports partnerships in the country, involving 26 schools and more than 5,000 children and the calendar of events is growing.

SPIN runs a host of sporting activities and competitions for pupils of all ages and abilities around Huddersfield, with a pathway for talented athletes and leadership programmes for pupils.

The Sainsbury’s School Games is the national programme of competitive sport for schools and SPIN ensures that all schools in the area have access to a wide range of activities from level 1 (intra school), to level 2 (inter school), through to level 3 (West Yorkshire).  Many schools are currently in the process of applying for the School Games Kitemark and those which are successful will be mentioned in next year’s programme.

SPIN encourages schools to promote healthy active lifestyles and works with them to establish Change for Life clubs, developing young people’s understanding of healthy eating and regular exercise. It also has good links with several local sports clubs, including tennis, cycling, goalball, martial arts, wheelchair sports and golf, to get children interested at an early age.

Newsome High School is the lead school in West Yorkshire for disability sport, leading on the government funded Project Ability programme, which involves training staff, providing competitive opportunities, such as goalball, sitting volleyball and Paralympics sports days, for young people with disabilities as well as developing links with local clubs so that the young people can participate in sport and physical activity beyond the school day.

SPIN exists and works for the young people and if they are taking up sports and having a healthy lifestyle, it is worth all of the hard work which goes into maintaining the structure in order to provide the opportunities.

The success of SPIN was acknowledged at The Examiner Community Awards 2013 when SPIN won the award for the best community project, sponsored by Ramsden’s Solicitors.

SPIN have also won Highly Commended and Winner awards of the SGO Regional Awards in 2014-2015.
