Newsome Academy provides high quality careers advice and guidance to support the ambitions of all of our students. This is developed throughout a student’s time at the school and is always supportive of their aspirations, strengths and skills. The focus of the support is aimed at access to all destinations: academic, vocational and technical, without bias.
Our careers programme aims to:
- Prepare students for the transition to life beyond secondary school (higher education and the world of work)
- Support students in making informed decisions which are suitable and ambitious for them
- Provide students with well-rounded experiences
- Develop soft skills, e.g. communication, innovation, resilience and leadership, which support students to be successful in the curriculum and in their careers
- Inspire and motivate students to develop their aspirations
- Ensure compliance with the Gatsby Benchmarks requirement
Gatsby Benchmarks
In 2014 the Gatsby Report made a major contribution to our understanding of what constitutes ‘quality’ in Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance (CEIAG) in secondary schools in England. As a result, eight benchmarks of good practice were drawn up that identify the elements of good careers guidance:
- A stable careers programme
- Learning from career and labour market information
- Addressing the needs of each pupil
- Linking curriculum learning to careers
- Encounters with employers and employees
- Experiences of workplaces
- Encounters with further and higher education
- Personal guidance
Our Provider Access Policy sets out our arrangements for managing the access of providers to our students, for the purposes of giving them information about approved technical education, qualifications or apprenticeships.
All our students have access to the following:
- Independent and impartial careers guidance
- Careers appointments with the Careers Advisor, on request or via lunchtime drop-in sessions (at least one 1-1 appointment by age 16)
- Individual MyDirections accounts which provide students with the information they need to make decisions about the future. They will access careers information tailored to their age and relevant to all the different stages of career planning
- Personal record of their career journey (interactions, skills builder, research etc.)
- Regular updates on local careers events, the regional labour market information and work experience and apprenticeship opportunities
- Opportunities to engage with a wide range of professionals from a variety of careers, industries, and FE, HE and apprenticeship providers to support students making informed choices
- At least one meaningful encounter with an employee or employer each academic year
- At least one experience of a workplace by the age of 16
- Support that is bespoke to address every student’s individual needs to minimise the barriers to future opportunities, ensuring inclusion is at the heart
We take immense pride in our careers programme, which consistently delivers outstanding results, as demonstrated by our latest destinations report. This report serves as a testament to the effectiveness of our careers programme and our unwavering commitment to achieve our intent for students to live a successful and fulfilling future. We remain committed to providing our students with the best possible opportunities to realise their aspirations, and we look forward to celebrating their continued success in the years to come.
